I began my training at the Academy of Equine Dentistry, Glenns Ferry, Idaho in July of 2010. This July, I will return to Idaho for my third time. I hope to sit for the written portion of the certification process at this time, and may possibly attempt the practical portion of the certification process in November of this year or February of 2012. Even after certifying, I will continue to go to the Academy annually for the purpose of continuing education. The certification process at The Academy is a serious endeavor. One is required to submit 100 cases of routine dental work as well as 25 cases considered to be at an advanced level. These cases are checked and signed-off by a veterinarian. In addition to this, one also must pass a week-long practical exam involving 9 horses as well as a written examination. The Academy of Equine Dentistry offers a specialized education for both dental technicians and veterinarians in the field of equine dental care. This was the first school of its kind, and it has been a pioneer in the advancements in dental technologies and techniques. The Academy remains the leader in the training of practitioners at all levels. Students travel from all over the world to attend these specialized classes.
The training program at the Academy of Equine Dentistry is the most rigorous in the field. It is structured as follows: Equine Anatomy First Level Beginning Dentistry Intermediate Dentistry Advanced Dentistry Certification Advanced Continuing Education Courses
Proper use of dental instruments-- both power and manual-- is stressed. Routine dental procedures are practiced on skulls and then performed on live horses under direct supervision. For more information about The Academy of Equine Dentistry, please go to the links page of this website.

At the Academy, students are paired up with certified dentists and have the opportunity to get hands-on practice under a watchful eye. Every day students are required to report on the cases from the previous day. By combining rigorous lectures with intense practical experiences, The Academy readies its students for the surprises of the real world. While at The Academy, students practice proper, safe techniques that will later be utilized in the field.
